An increase in energy efficiency, water and waste management or the use of the circular economy in hotels is imperative to reduce emissions and contribute to ecologically and economically sustainable tourism. Hotels are thus faced with the challenge of optimising their energy consumption without compromising the quality of the service they offer to their guests, while at the same time significantly reducing their costs.
Environmental awareness has led customers to opt for companies that adopt environmentally friendly policies.
According to the GlobalWebindex study, 6 out of 10 tourists opt for companies committed to the environment and more than 30% would be willing to pay a higher price to stay in a hotel with these characteristics.
The European Commission estimates that savings of 15-20% in heating, 5-30% in cooling, 40-70% in hot water and 7-60% in lighting are possible.
METCUB, investors and hotel developers committed to the environment
METCUB implements sustainability guidelines in all its projects, from the refurbishment and repositioning of its hotels to the daily operations. Proof of this is the development of its own application to optimise energy efficiency in the building, allowing the hotel operator and the guest the domotic control (light, temperature, blinds, etc.). The Madrid Edition, Bardessono or Proximity Hotel are just some of the examples of hotels committed to sustainability and environmental care.
The Madrid Edition, from Monte de Piedad to sustainable urban resort: The conversion of the offices of the former Monte de Piedad de Caja Madrid into the luxury hotel The Madrid EDITION, has won the 2022 Ahead Award for the best hotel transformation of the year in Europe, awarded by the specialised magazine Sleeper. Fernández Molina and Ruiz Larrea Arquitectura have provided the new hotel use of the building with high sustainability standards. These include the reduction of CO2 emissions, the incorporation of aerothermal energy and heat recovery systems with maximum efficiency and maximum levels of efficiency and airtightness to reduce energy demand as much as possible, as well as the use of environmentally certified materials. In addition, measures have been taken to increase natural lighting, such as the creation of new courtyards and the extension of existing ones. The existing block courtyard has been extended and a second courtyard has been created to bring natural light into the deepest bay of the building, reducing the need for artificial lighting.
All of this has enabled the Hotel to receive the LEED sustainability seal in its Gold category.
Bardessono Hotel (United States): Located in Napa Valley, California, this hotel focuses on energy efficiency and water conservation. They use solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling systems, and have a green roof that helps regulate the temperature inside. They also offer electric bicycles for guests to use during their stay.
Proximity Hotel (Greensboro, North Carolina, USA): Recognised as one of the most sustainable hotels in the United States. It has LEED Platinum certification, which means that it meets the highest standards of sustainable construction and energy efficiency. Some of the actions implemented by this hotel are the use of solar and geothermal energy to generate electricity and hot water, and the collection of rainwater for watering gardens and flushing toilets.
